A Month In “The Book of Thunder”

By Fin Sheridan

Well, August. You got here fast. The schools have broken up, holidays are well underway and it’s time for us to try something a little bit different here at CBN READ. During the month of August, we’re going to be diving into the book of Psalms.

Why Psalms? Well, Psalms is a pretty special book. 150 poems, songs, ballads and laments, pulled together into the middle of the Bible. The Psalms cover every scenario and human experience. Eugene Peterson, who gave us “The Message” Bible, says that “Everything that a person can possibly feel, experience, and say is brought into expression before God in the Psalms.”

Throughout Christian history, the Psalms have been celebrated. They are called “Jesus’ hymnbook” because of how often he quotes them. Author Steven Lawson says, in his book about the reformer Martin Luther, that “Romans gave Luther his theology, but it was the Psalms that gave him his thunder.

Matthew Henry, who wrote one of the most widely used commentaries of the Bible, says that “We have now before us one of the choicest parts of the Old Testament, wherein there is so much of Christ and his gospel, as well as of God and his law, that it has been called the summary of both Testaments.”

You’ll get likes and comments, we’ll get likes and comments, everyone reads their Bible more. It’s a win-win.

How can you be involved and get the most out of this journey? Excellent question! There’s 3 ways you can engage with CBN READ this month (and other months, to be honest!).

Going on a date. Carrying a sofa down 3 flights of stairs. Reading CBN READ. What do all these things have in common? They’re all better done with someone. Why not let someone know that you’re reading CBN READ and see if they want to READ with you? It could be a great way to grow together…

Show some love.

One of the other ways you can engage is to share our posts, particularly on Facebook. You’ll get likes and comments, we’ll get likes and comments, everyone reads their Bible more. It’s a win-win.
