Could Today Be Your Breakthrough?

By Fin Sheridan

Many of us know the story of Joseph. If you don’t then, might I recommend this Superbook episode that’ll bring you right up to date… Or you could watch the musical version on YouTube, like I just forced my wife to. Joseph ended up in Egypt, sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. His luck began to change as he worked in a wealthy household but after rejecting his mistresses advances, he finds himself thrown into jail.

Joseph eventually finds himself out of prison and into the palace of Egypt. However, he was in prison for over 2 years; probably for between 5-8 years! He’d gone from slave to servant to prison and then to palace. A rough journey by any estimation.

When we hear stories like these, we view them from the ending, backwards. We know that it all works out for Joseph so we don’t consider some much what it would’ve been like to be in prison in Egypt, without any idea whether he’d end up ever freed, much less promoted to Prime Minister of Egypt.

We know that Joseph gets a happy ending – but Joseph didn’t. All he knew was that he was in prison, indefinitely. As far as he knew, that was it. There were no hints or expected release dates for him to hold onto.

“We see our story firsthand; moment by moment rather than from the happy ending.”

Often, we can feel like Joseph, stuck in a place, position or circumstance, without any hope of escape. Just like him, we don’t know how it will turn out. We see our story firsthand; moment by moment rather than from the happy ending.

Our solidarity with Joseph is also our cause for hope – we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. We don’t know if this will be the day that something changes or shifts. We don’t know if tomorrow will be our breakthrough and our breakout.

All Joseph had to hold onto were the promises of God, through his prophetic childhood dreams. He’d seen glimpses of what God had in store for him and so he just waited, trusting that God would be faithful to him, just as he’d been faithful to God. Sometimes, that’s all we can do too.
