Finding Your True Value

By Tra Knox

‘Then He said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”’ Luke 12:15 NLT

If we put on our English language hat and look deeper into this caution that Jesus spoke. He used the word ‘Beware’ followed by an exclamation mark. We need to therefore take note and understand that Jesus was putting a strong emphasis and the warning on this statement. And I believe it is still very relevant for us today.

In the day and age we live in we are encouraged to accumulate possessions.  Our society believes that value is connected to how little or how much we have. This is so counter to God’s Kingdom. In the bible, ‘greed’, is described as ‘an excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions’.  That is strong stuff! Jesus speaks this warning in Luke 12:15 for us to be on our guard, so that we don’t fall into this trap.

Jesus makes it clear that our life is not measured by how much we own.

A measure is when we hold a comparison with a standard. This causes us to reach a decision about our value which can be completely incorrect and skewed.

Jesus doesn’t mind if we have ‘things’, but it is whether the ‘things’ have us.  Jesus wants our heart to be pure and free of the snares of this world.  Jesus saw that our value and worth has the capacity to be measured by possessions in this world.

In Matthew 6:33 Jesus gave a clear antidote for life and all its pressures, ”But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also (AMP).”

When we make Jesus the main thing in our lives; when we put Him first, give Him our full attention, everything else will just follow.  We won’t have to pursue stuff, just Jesus.
