The Secret Behind PostSecret

By Fin Sheridan

Do you remember PostSecret? In case you’re not familiar, here’s the Wikipedia definition:

“PostSecret is an ongoing community mail art project, created by Frank Warren in 2005, in which people mail their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard. Selected secrets are then posted on the PostSecret website, or used for PostSecret’s books or museum exhibits.”

Since 2005, millions of secrets have been sent into PostSecret. They range from the vague, to the specific, covering literally every human topic. Sex, faith, parents, friendships, regrets, triumphs, frustrations and feelings; all are covered. People decorate their postcards, creating beautiful snapshots of the emotions behind the secrets. It’s a remarkable and beautiful project, with several books being made from the blog.

PostSecret has created a loyal and connected community. People share encouragement, they go to events, they post messages of love and support. The organisation works closely with suicide prevention agencies. It’s a force for good.

“Confession of any sort is health and life to our souls.”

Whilst it’s not a Christian organisation, there’s something profoundly Christian behind all this. Why does it have such a deep effect? Well, partly because the truth of James 5:16. We are encouraged to “confess our sins to one another, so that we may be healed”. This doesn’t just apply to sin (neither is everything that gets posted to PostSecret a sin). Confession of any sort is health and life to our souls. It brings to the light what has lived in the dark. It gives opportunities for people to speak truth and encouragement to us.

Confession brings wholeness. Sharing our secrets is the route to others being able to share our burden, bring perspective, provide an insight or simply just be there in our circumstance.
