There is No Ordinary Life

By Fin Sheridan

How many of us would say that our lives are “extraordinary”? In the midst of routines, appointments, days and weeks that seem to fly by faster than ever – how scary is it that it’s April?!-  it’s all too easy to miss the miracle.

And yet, that’s exactly what life is: miraculous. There is no ordinary human being, no ordinary life. For starters, here’s some amazing statistics, about you and your body:

The average human heart beats about 72 times a minute, 3,600,000 times a year and 2.5 billion times a lifetime. Don’t ask me how they know that but that’s what they say.

When you blush, the lining of your stomach blushes too. I find that oddly adorable. “I like you and so does my tummy”.

“You were created in a wonderful way and for a wonderful purpose.”

The inside of your belly button contains thousands of bacteria that form an ecosystem the size of an entire rainforest. Next time you tickle a baby on the stomach, remember that.

An adult is made up of 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (7 octillion) atoms. By comparison, there’s only 300,000,000,000 (300 billion) stars in our galaxy. I wish my bank account had that many 0’s.

In one day, your blood travels 12,000 miles around your body. That’s four times the distance across the USA from coast-to-coast. Route 66 runs from your shoulders to your waist.

You’re incredible, aren’t you? Rarely do we stop to marvel at the intricate wonder of the human body but it is a marvel. You were created in a wonderful way and for a wonderful purpose. Your life is an extraordinary gift. There is no-one else with your looks, your attitudes, your DNA or your thumbprint. We are unique. You are unique. So seize the day, grab the moment, take the risk. There is no “ordinary” life.
