Your Season Isn’t Your Whole Story

By Fin Sheridan

Maybe this is optimistic but it’s starting to feel like winter is beginning to thaw. Daylight is lasting a little longer, the sun is shining a little warmer and I’m starting to consider only wearing 2 layers rather than 3. One of the best things about living in the UK is that we have tangible seasons; winter is definitely winter, spring time is rainy and luscious green, autumn is crisp and thrilling and summer…. Well, summer tries its best.

Our lives have seasons too. Ecclesiastes 3 gives us a beautiful and realistic picture of the times that we go through:

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

a time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to break down, and a time to build up;

a time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

a time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

a time to tear, and a time to sew;

a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

a time to love, and a time to hate;

a time for war, and a time for peace.”

“God knows our seasons but even more than that, he is present in all of them.”

There are some seasons there that we would prefer, others that we’d rather avoid. Times for mourning, weeping, losing are hard and real. We’d much rather times of love, laughter and dancing, wouldn’t we?

Just like the transition from winter to spring, often the seasons mix and merge. We can experience silence, dancing, birth and death in the same day or the same week. All are a part of life; a life that God wants to be present in. The Bible tells us that our steps are ordered by God, that our days are written in his book. He knows our seasons but even more than that, he is present in all of them.

If your season feels difficult right now, then these verses can give us comfort. Hard things have their time but there is also a time for their healing. Suffering happens but the promise of God is that those times pass and in their place, prosperity comes. Whatever “seasons” you’re in, they aren’t the end of your story. Just a part of it.
