Dodging Speeding Traffic For Water
Everyday, Cholou has to make a dangerous trek to fetch water.
Every morning before school, Cholou faithfully waters the vegetable garden that his 8th Grade class has planted. But there’s one problem. In order to collect water for the garden and all the other needs around the school, Cholou has to make a dangerous trek.
“I have to cross a busy highway to get to the well,” said the little boy. “There is a blind curve that makes it really hard to see the cars and motorcycles coming down the street.”
Every day, Cholou has to make the two-mile round-trip to get water four times. That’s a total of eight miles per day just to get water.
“I’m always afraid on one of those trips to get water I will get run over by a car,” Cholou told us.
Cholou never used to make this trip, dodging speeding traffic for water. His school had a large tank that collected rainwater, but the tank was destroyed in a powerful typhoon that hit the Philippines. So CBN helped the school by digging them a deep well. Now Cholou and the other children have all the clean water they need to drink, and to water the vegetable garden.
“I am grateful to CBN who gave us this well at school.”
“I feel much safer now,” Cholou told us. “I don’t have to cross the highway anymore. And with more water, the plants are growing faster.”
As for Cholou, he now has more time to study and tend to the class’s garden. When the vegetables are ready, the school will sell them to help buy books and school supplies for him and his classmates.
“I am grateful to CBN who gave us this well at school,” Cholou said with a smile. “Thank you very much!”
