You’ve probably always known that exercise is good for you. It makes sense that regular exercise would help improve a person’s circulation, muscle tone, bone strength, and overall flexibility. You can hear its praises daily from your TVs and radios; in talk show conversations, and in commercials for everything from footwear to breakfast cereals and yogurt – that when combined with a healthy eating plan, exercise can even promote weight loss. But what you may not be aware of are the far-reaching health benefits exercise can provide in the battle against disease.

In his newest book, Get Fit and Live!, Dr. Don Colbert and his son Kyle, a certified personal trainer, share their belief that God designed our bodies for movement and resistance, and regular exercise will not only keep us strong and healthy into our later years, but that exercise can target and fight specific diseases now. Get Fit and Live! combines Dr. Colbert’s medical experience with his son’s personal training expertise, creating a new workout guide that offers pictures, illustrations, and a 25-minute downloadable video of personal instruction – covering both beginner and advanced exercise routines. By following their Get Fit and Live program, the Colberts say you will lose weight; improve your energy level; replace fat with lean muscle; and prevent or manage a number of chronic diseases – osteoporosis, arthritis, and fibromyalgia – to name just a few.

Dr. Colbert believes that God wants His children strong and so we must exercise regularly in order to be strong and stay strong. On The 700 Club, Don and Kyle Colbert demonstrated exercises they believe can be used to target and fight specific diseases; Kyle showed the resistance exercises that help prevent type 2 diabetes and Don demonstrated the rebounding exercises he uses to target cancer.

SEVEN EXERCISES FOR SEVEN MINUTES

The foundation of the Get Fit and Live program consists of seven exercises that can be completed in seven minutes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday – a simple, fast, and enjoyable plan. But when faced with preventing or recovering from a specific disease, Dr. Colbert modifies his patient’s routine to include the type of exercise that will best combat their specific disease. In addition to individual chapters targeting type 2 diabetes and cancer, in their book Get Fit and Live!, the Colberts include chapters dedicated to targeting: osteoporosis; fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue; heart disease; osteoarthritis; and weight loss.

Following are the lists of exercises specifically prescribed to fight type 2 diabetes and cancer that the Colberts shared with The 700 Club audience.

Type 2 Diabetes

The more muscle you build in the lower extremities and buttocks, the better blood sugar control you will have. Aerobic activity and resistance training are recommended.

Exercises for Type 2 Diabetes (pp. 140-141):

  1. SQUATS – using dumbbells (2 sets—5 lbs each)
  2. LUNGES – with a chair (p.79)
  3. BACK FLIES – with resistance bands (p.81)
  4. SIT-DOWN BAND BACK FLIES TO ROW – need a mat (p.88)

 Cancer

The best form of exercise for fighting cancer is aerobic. This includes brisk walking, cycling, swimming or jogging. Dr. Colbert and Kyle also recommend bouncing on a mini-trampoline, or rebounding. Rebounding combats cancer by improving the immune system. Rebounding can increase lymph flow by 15 to 30 times. Some rebounders come with a stability bar.
