THE INFINITE GREATNESS OF JESUS

For believers everywhere, Christmas is our season. We should desire to tell others about Jesus throughout the entire year, yet this is our special time to announce that the Saviour has come into the world. When the angel Gabriel told Mary, a young virgin, that she would conceive a child, he reassured her, “Do not be afraid” (Luke 1:30).

These are good words to remember if we are hesitant to tell others about the Lord. The more we understand and appreciate who Jesus is, the more we will be prepared to tell others about Him. After Gabriel told Mary not to fear, he went on to say: “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end” (Luke 1:31- 33).

Gabriel was giving Mary fi ve indicators to show the enormous magnitude of Jesus’ infl uence: He will be great. Jesus would not be an ordinary child in Nazareth; He would be great. Part of Mary’s motherhood would be raising a human child who has the greatness of the Son of God.

He will be called the son of the Most High. Jesus is the Son of the awesome God we worship. People need to understand that He is not average. He is not only a prophet; He is God’s only begotten Son, who died on the cross and was raised to life on the third day. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. The throne of David is the throne of royalty.

Hebrews 12:2 tells us to fi x our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. He will reign forever. The throne of our Lord Jesus Christ is not temporary; it extends into all eternity. Not only will He rule forever, but His kingdom, and His kingdom principles, will reign forever. His kingdom will have no end.

Perhaps the angel restated the same point to make sure that we, who are fi nite, mortal, and limited in our thinking, would understand that God’s kingdom will endure beyond all time…infi nitely, immortal, and unlimited! Gabriel goes on to give a “bonus verse” in this passage about the nature of God, a verse that we should appropriate every day of our lives: “For nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37).

We all may face something that we consider impossible. In the kingdom of God, however, we have the assurance that nothing is impossible with Him. So, as we enter this holy season, may we have a fresh appreciation of who Jesus is in our hearts. Let us give to Him anything we think is impossible. After all, He is the Son of the Most High who sits on the royal throne forever.

His greatness is never-ending.
