Thanks to social media we are better connected than ever before. But are we really? Our world seems to spin so fast at times and it is important that we take a moment to talk. It is ironic that we have lost the art of connection in its most basic form – conversation.

Somehow in the vast array of options and the variety of methods of social interaction we have lost connection with one another. The intention of these platforms was to bring us together in communities, shared interest or discussion.

But somewhere down the line it has instead isolated us from the very thing it strived to do. We have become more comfortable behind a screen or device than in front of one another. Maybe it seems less vulnerable to type it than to say it? Maybe we can detach ourselves to some degree?

Whatever it may be, nothing substitutes personal connection. Why? Because right from the beginning, we were made for relational connection. Man and woman in marriage, family, a nation – all God’s idea to bring us into community and communion with one another. Community is something modelled by God Himself in the Trinity. We were made for connection.

If you need to vent, then do it. God is big enough to handle your honesty

All great stuff to say, but how? Your diary may be full of meetings or maybe you are sat at home thinking, “will I see anyone at all today”. Whatever your current situation we have the opportunity for connection. Right now, in the space you occupy, you can have instant connection with a real person; Jesus.

Take a moment to breathe. Still your mind. In the blur of life’s passing traffic there can be a stillness. Have a chat with the one who knows all about you. He formed you; He created you, quirks and warts alike; He knows how you tick. Speak to Him. Don’t think about constructing a ‘proper’ prayer, just talk. If you need to vent, then do it. He is big enough to handle your honesty, but just start somewhere.

Read this story in Mark 4: 35-41 (ESV). The disciples caught in a storm and struggling to keep their heads above the waves. Have you ever felt like that? Jesus calmly resting, snoozing away on a little cushion. In their desperation, full of honesty they call to Jesus saying, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”  And here’s the amazing thing about conversation; it’s two way! Jesus responds with three simple words that stopped the storm in its tracks; Peace. Be Still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (v.39)

You may be in the middle of a raging storm inside you. Maybe it’s fear? Maybe depression or anxiety? Whatever your storm, let’s talk. Talk it through with someone you trust, a friend, leader or family member. But in it all, let’s not forget to talk to our Father. Our Abba. He is waiting for you to climb up onto His knee and just talk. Connection is right there for you and the reception is always good.

Are we really connecting?
Are we really connecting?
