We are living in unprecedented times. COVID-19 is running riot across our nation and the nations of the world. We have seen the devasting effects of this disease across our television screens and media outlets, and now we are entering a state of lockdown and self-isolation to try and reduce the curve of its spread.
In times like these, all of the outward appearances get stripped away. Coronavirus is no respecter of age, gender, nationality or socio-economic status. We are once again all just human beings. In Psalm 33 it puts it like this:
“No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.”
In other words, despite our great endeavours, our political strength, our technological advancement or our economies, we do not have the strength to do this alone.
He meets us in our time of need; in the middle of our calamity and pulls us up
If that’s where we end this, then that’d be pretty hopeless right? The good news is that isnt where the story ends. As we turn our eyes towards heaven, reaching out to God, we find that He is already reaching out to us. He meets us in our time of need; in the middle of our calamity and pulls us up. The Psalmist continues;
“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.”
Worship Him. Trust Him. And He will keep you.
As we do this, I truly believe we will see His goodness displayed in our nation, we will see opportunities to share His Gospel increase and we will see the miraculous follow those who believe.
In the midst of COVID-19, I pray that this will be our statement of intent:
“We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May Your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in You.”
