How Could You Forget about a €1.5m Painting?

By Fin Sheridan

Last week, BBC reported that a Parisian art dealer had forgotten a €1.5m painting, leaving it in a taxi. It wasn’t until the next day that he realised he’d left it in the boot of the cab. You can read the full story here but before you judge him, haven’t we all done something similar?

A 2013 study by the maker of ‘Post It’ notes (who certainly capitalise on our forgetfulness) found that the average person forgets four facts, items or events every day. The 2,000 adult participants can forget as many as 1,460 things per year, including phones, keys and wallet. We forget where we park, we forget what we went into the room for and, in the digital age, we find our phones in our hands only to forget what we pulled them out for.

Psalm 103 says: “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits — who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

“We forget what he’s done and, in doing so, we forget who he is.”

It’s worth noting that the Psalmist lists the benefits of what God has done for us, through Jesus. We have to be reminded because we so easily forget. We forget what he’s done and, in doing so, we forget who he is.

Gaining more knowledge, more revelation, more wisdom is really important but often, it’s the things that we already know about God that we need to remember. The Gospel is glorious and mysterious but it is also simple. We often forget the beauty of the simplicity – and that’s where confusion, doubt and worry can slip in.

Try and find ways to “forget not”. Whether it’s reading articles like these, subscribing to our REACH magazine, changing your phone wallpaper to a scripture or memory verse, pursue ways of reminding yourself about all God has done. After all, that’s worth way more than €1.5m painting.
