One of the many, many reasons that dogs are better than cats (and if you disagree, feel free to comment and tell me why!) is that a dog loves to find out what makes you happy so they can do it. That’s why they keep bringing you the stick to throw – they think you like throwing sticks! Their buffoonish obsession with being a “good boy” is part of their canine charm. God created dogs and he saw that they were good and they wagged their tails because being a good dog makes them the happiest.

Have you ever thought what makes God the happiest? It’s a question that we all ask about our closest relationships – we wonder what makes our spouse happiest, we discover what makes our children happiest, we learn what makes our colleagues happiest. But what about God? What makes an eternally loving, complete God happy?

Well, the best place to look is in his word, the Bible. Thankfully there’s several verses that give us a strong suggestion of the things that are closest to God’s heart.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” James 1:27

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

Notice the theme here? The heart of God is for those that need it the most. He wants us to “love mercy” because he loves mercy! It’s at the core of who God is.
